One store I definitely need to visit if I ever go to Tokyo, Japan is the Tokyu Hands store. In this video from Monocle they take us inside the “description-defying Tokyo institution that sells just about everything you could ever need and is loved by everyone who visits”.

Now we talk about Monocle. They had made the first book which will be released in September 2013 by Gestalten Verlag.

The book is called The Monocle Guide to Better Living, this is an “informative and entertaining collection of writing and recommendations from across the globe. They have surveyed locations, products and ideas to create the ultimate reference for inspirational ways to improve your life”.

Going home, back to Oslo.

NYC, what a great diverse city! I read somewhere that there a more than 800 languages spoken in NYC so it most be one of the biggest melting pots in the world. It might not be the city with the most smiling and friendly people :-) (customer service sucked in many of the stores I visited) but overall… it was a great trip where the days was pretty hectic since this was the first visit to NYC.

I’m really happy that we stayed in the West Village and not in a hotel near Times Square. Next time I visit I’m definitely gonna spend more time in the Lower East Side and the East Village, since we didn’t have enough time in these areas this time.

Visiting Soho, Noho, Lower East Side.

First stop was the famous Katz’s Delicatessen. According to Wikipedia each week, Katz’s serves 10,000 pounds of pastrami, 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs. It was founded in 1888 has become popular among locals and tourists alike for its pastrami sandwiches and hot dogs, both of which are widely considered among New York’s best. We went there a bit early, probably a bit too early since we were still full after the breakfast so we didn’t have any room for their famous sandwiches, and there was already a big line.

Katz's
So we went to the REED SPACE NYC store (close to Katz’s) by Staple Design where I bought a DSPTCH Camera Sling Strap in olive and a white Casio G-SHOCK 3230 Vintage White Silver Mirror.

Parking NYC Lafayette street
Smart idea using these simple car parking lifts if you have limited space.

Nike Mercer Street. Nike Free Run 3
My feet were very sore after wearing sandals all day that I had to stop by the Nike store in Mercer street ;-) and buy a black pair Nike Free Run +3. They make them in some really cool colors but only in mens sizes. If you want them in red, yellow etc. you need to custom build them via NikeiD.

The shoes are great! Very light and is designed to move as a minimal extension of your foot, with Dynamic Fit technology which molds the shoe to each individual foot. Check-out the video with Nike Free Run + Designer Mark Miner here.

The Cage

The Cage
Not far from Perry Street is the West 4th Street Courts, also known as “The Cage”, a notable public athletic venue for amateur basketball.

And not far from the Cage is the Gray’s Papaya located. I didn’t try their hotdogs (which they are known for?) but their burgers was pretty good.

Store West Village owners cat
One of the local stores in the West Village had this super cute cat, which would follow you around in the store. Not sure if that is allowed in Norway (to have Pets in your store if you also deal with food and dairies).

Magazine Store West Village

One of my favorite local shop was this little magazine store, filled with all kind of cool magazines!! I bought Hypebeast, Brownbook and the magazine from Highsnobiety which are not easy to get in Norway, but could have bought the whole store!

Travel Tip: If you have an unlocked iPhone and need data traffic while visiting the US, the T-Mobile $2 per day prepaid calling and data plan where you get unlimited talk, text and 2G web, works great! Not the fastest web, but it works fine for email, google map etc. You don’t need the $3 offer since you will not get a faster web.
